Notes

  • Duke Geren Masto and Kronq met the rest of the party at the inn in the morning before heading off towards the mines
  • Along the way Masto explained that he had a vision about a powerful evil approaching the land, and a leader who will save the lands from it
    • In the vision, he was instructed to find a crystal in the mines below Waverly and harvest it to create a powerful weapon that will be used against the evil
  • Upon entering the crystal chamber, the party saw the crate they delivered lying in the corner, and a large cylindrical object bolted to the floor near the crystal
    • In the cylinder, there was an adamantine wedge pointed at the crystal
  • Geir investigated the chamber, looking for any arcane or magical clues about the nature of the crystal, and concluded that the crystal itself was not radiating any detectable energy, but that a celestial energy was circling the chamber
  • The Duke advised people to take cover, then had a worker activate the device
    • After a moment, a detonation occurred, propelling the wedge into the crystal
    • Once the dust had settled, the party could see that a fist sized chunk of the crystal had been cracked off
    • The adamantine wedge was destroyed in the process
  • Abarrane spotted and picked up the crystal chunk
  • Shortly afterward, a slight tremor was felt, before all of the torches extinguished and a winged snake-like creature appeared
    • The creature appeared to be trying to communicate, but only spoke in gibberish
  • The Duke interpreted this creature to be a servant of the evil being he had seen in his visions
  • Geir and Kronq both had a feeling this creature wasn’t there to fight them
    • Geir tried to communicate through charades, and Kronq noticed that the creature was not outright hostile, but trying to communicate instead of fight
  • Geir convinced Abarrane to place the chunk back on the rest of the crystal, at which point the snake creature moved forward to try to take the chunk
    • Duke Masto used this opportunity to attack the creature, but failed to hit. In retaliation, the snake bit him, dealing significant damage
  • Upon seeing this, Auro used Sleep on the Duke to incapacitate him
  • During this, Abarrane took the crystal chunk and misty stepped away
  • Geir tried again to communicate with the snake, but this time telepathically
    • He was only able to understand certain words, but he was able to ascertain that the snake creature was trying to defend the crystal, and that damaging it would cause bad things to happen
  • Geir shouted to Abarrane that the snake didn’t want to hurt them, it just wanted to protect the crystal, so she handed the chunk back to the snake
  • As the snake returned to the rest of the crystal, and Auro restrained the other two miners who were trying to wake Duke Masto, the crystal suddenly grew brighter before firing a beam of energy out of the chipped section into the snake
    • The snake wasn’t necessarily dead, but it was definitely at least down
  • Now that the snake wasn’t going to stop them, and fearing that someone else may take the chunk and do something bad with it, they snuck the chunk out of the mines, and also carried the Duke and two miners back out
  • After awakening and being tended to by his personal physician, the Duke summoned the party, and thanked them for taking him out of the mines
    • He questioned whether the party interpreted what the snake communicated correctly. Is the crystal itself evil, or is it used to fight evil?
    • The only thing he knows for sure is that he has seen a terrible vision of the future, where a great evil has destroyed the land
  • The Duke then tasks the party with finding more information about the crystal, and gives them some gold to help him cover travel and supplies
  • Before heading out, the party took a long rest
    • Abarrane asked Kronq to go down to the apothecary and buy some health potions
    • She gave him 10 gold, which was able to purchase 2 healing potions
  • The party decided to head east, believing that the light that was seen in the sky was somehow related to these events
    • They took a small sail boat, which the Duke provided, and sailed across Lake Destiny to Pinecrest Farms
  • Upon arriving at Pinecrest, the party talked with Allen Roswell, the owner of Pinecrest Farms
    • Abarrane purchased a bushel of fresh apples
  • Geir asked Allen if he saw the streak in the sky, which he confirmed he had seen, and was actually about to head in to the forest with some other farmers to investigate
    • Upon hearing this, Auro attempted to knock him out (????)
    • Allen swung back, and multiple farmers surrounded him
  • The party eventually deescalates the kerfuffle, kinda, as the farmers race ahead to investigate, and the party tries their best to keep up
    • Through sheer spite and determination, Auro keeps up very easily
  • Upon arriving at the location, which appears to be a weird metallic vessel of some sort, Auro and Allen race to reach it first. Auro pulls ahead, but then Allen pushes him.
    • While they are preoccupied with beating each other, Geir calmly walks up and is the first to reach the vessel
  • He locates a lever on the outside, which lowers a door/ramp to allow access inside
  • Using a special tool, Geir checks for radiation, and finds the ship’s power core is leaking radiation, but it is different than he expects it to be
  • Meanwhile, Abarrane sits in the pilot’s seat, and enjoys pressing all the buttons and flipping all the switches
  • Geir finds auxiliary power, and is able to access the last log file, which shows a humanoid in a full body suit reminiscent of a Victorian diving suit, who appears to be in a rush, and says he is leaving to find somewhere safe to take cover
  • Kronq manages to find a set of footprints near the vessel that are too big and deep to belong to any of the farmers or the rest of the party, and points them out.
  • Allen has his son take the rest of the farmers back, then helps the party track the footprints to the mountains
  • They eventually reach an old mine entrance, and upon approaching it a voice called out telling them to stay back, and asked if they were bounty hunters
    • Geir attempts to convince them that the party isn’t here to hurt him
    • The person in the mine entrance fires a plasma bolt from a hidden turret in a tower, as a warning shot
  • While they are talking, the bounty hunters roll up out of the woods across the clearing

Feedback

  • Party could metagame less
    • The nature of the crystal, turret hidden in the tower, etc
  • Try to avoid speaking over each other

Other Thoughts

The campaign won’t become overly sci-fi, so don’t worry about that. It isn’t going completely off the rails. For context, it’s just spelljammer with space ships instead of space boats.
